History of Reflexology
Humans touching the hands or feet for the purpose of relaxation probably began before the Egyptians; however, they were the first to leave a record of it. The record of the Egyptians was found in the Physicians Tomb from the early 6th dynasty (about 2,330 BC).
Pictures depicting the massaging of the hands and feet and had hieroglyphics that translate “Don’t hurt me”
and the reply “I shall act so you praise me”.
How Reflexology Works
There are over 7,000 nerve endings on the bottom of each foot. Stimulation of these nerve endings sends signals along to the spinal cord, and up to the thalamus gland in the brain, which produces its own opiate-like painkillers called endorphins.
Reflexology stimulates the body’s own pain killing system.
Whether a pressure point or needles, it is the nervous system’s reaction to the stimulation that begins the process of releasing painkillers from the brain into the blood stream to be distributed throughout the body.
How Long Will Relief Last
It all depends on the individual. When the tension return usually the pain will also return, if the person is in good health, a headache can easily be relieved; however, if a person has chronic back pain, reflexology could provide only temporary relief. More sessions can mean more relaxation that gives longer periods of relief.
